Fishing Derby Day #5

Our 5th year at the local fishing derby day. A few fish were caught, rods were given to us, and free hot dogs for lunch - plus, warm (too warm almost!) and beautiful weather. It was a good day:
Lucy was such a great sport - she just mainly chilled and pulled/ate the grass. What a great fishing buddy.

Oh I love Miles' true smile shining through in this picture.

As Ben said, "Emmy in the one-minute of her fishing." Love it, though.

Miles caught 2 fish. He wanted them both to be released back in the water. Which is fine. I'm frankly surprised that he hadn't asked us to do that earlier. He was quite worried about the fish not being able to breathe. I think they both survived.

Sweet little Jonas. He wanted to catch one so badly. It pained my mama-heart. So towards the end I finally had got one and it was a big one - seriously! I had Jonas come over to start reeeling in "his" fish. Ben came to help and was surprised that it was a big fish. Too bad that within 2 feet of coming to shore, that darn fish got away. I was so mad. But at least Jonas could claim that he caught the biggest one. :)

When Lucy was bored pulling and eating grass, big sister Emmy helped and fed her some Cheerios. What sweet sisters they are. Love my girls. Love my boys.

Time for . . . Updates

I feel like I haven't written much about my "other" children, i.e., Miles, Jonas, and Emmy. Lucy gets updates monthly, but my others have been left out for a while. So here I go.

Miles. He is getting a few weeks away from finishing up the 1st grade. I think he's had an excellent year. I judge that mostly by the fact that he loves school. Loves it. To me, that is one of the best things to gain. We just did a read-a-thon fundraiser for 4 days. I picked out 20 books for him to read from the library and he did pretty great. It was fun having him read that much.
Miles is scared, or "doesn't like", a lot of things. Mainly germs, diseases, etc. He thinks that there are diseases or germs just about everywhere (and, okay, he's probably close to right). But he's dealing with his fears and other irrational thoughts okay. They are not consuming him and so I hope this is just a phase. We'll see.
He got a tadpole habitat for his birthday - almost 2 months ago. We sent in the coupon for the tadpole and have been waiting and waiting for warmer weather for it to be sent. Well it arrived today. And oh the excitement. Only to release it into its habitat and see a dead tadpole. Totally lame and sad. Miles handled it very well, considering. Mr. Dead Tadpole is now buried in our backyard. I immediately called the company and they are mailing out another one ASAP - let's hope it has better luck.
Miles likes to leave little treats under our pillows for us to discover as we go to bed. Things like chocolate, marshmellows, gum, notes, etc. It's pretty adorable. Unfortunately we usually have just brushed our teeth. . .

Jonas. He's great. With the exception of when he whines, he is so darn good! We ask him to do his chore, and he runs right up to do it. No complaints. He can be such a good breath of fresh air. Pleasant, silly, and fun to be around. He's a definite goof, too, and can be so entertaining. He hardly ruffles anyone's feathers (except when he whines). He has loved being outdoors as often as the weather allows. Swinging, playing in the tent, creating games with Emmy, etc.
We have a little index card with each kids' name on one. Once they get 10 stickers (for doing good acts) they can go to the "prize box" and choose something. Jonas was the first to get his first 10 and now is cruising right along with his next 10. I think he not only is trying to be good, he really and truly wants to be good.
He got his kindergarten shots last week. Due to the time I took my 3 kids and had to chase down my 2 boys through corridors, under chairs, etc., I had vowed I would never take them again. So Ben was the lucky one. Jonas was pretty furious when I told him he had to get them. And I guess he did throw a pretty sweet fit at the office for Ben - but, fortunately, no running away. And poor little guy got 4 (!) shots. He didn't feel terribly well that night nor the next day. He told us he's not getting his shots when he's 11 (that when the nurse told him he'd have to get them again). So now he's all ready for school! Eeeek.
When we were doing our little read-a-thon with Miles, Jonas went and got some "Bob books" (beginner books) for him to read. It was awesome. He's a good little reader.

Emmy. Definitely my sugar and spice. Wowzers. We still do our school each week - it's not as organized as with the boys, but it's what I can do right now. We have workbooks, memory-shape games, counting exercises, etc., so it works. She used to not be very in to it at all, and truth be told, couldn't even count to 10 (gasp! I admitting my child is not a super-genius. yet. . . .ha.). Couldn't or wouldn't, I don't know but I could guess. She just doesn't care about learning quite like my boys (weird, huh?). But lately she has been much better and has been a joy to do school with. I hope it continues.
She went to a birthday party this week . . . all alone. No parent and no sibling. We've never left her anywhere all on her own, so it was quite the deal. She couldn't stop talking about it the days leading up to it. It was so fun and makes me want to invite friends over for her birthday in August. :) She had a fabulous, fabulous time! It was just great for her to do something all on her own. A rare occasion in our household of 4 little ones. . .
She is adamant about being a princess when she grows up. Miles and her were in an argument about it just this morning. Miles trying to convince Emmy she couldn't be a princess due to his reasoning that older people are Queens, not princesses. I tried to sort and soothe the whole mess out.
I don't put her to nap everyday. And on the days I do put her to nap, sometimes she doesn't. Which is okay since she usually just stays upstairs and does whatever quietly. But she still needs naps. We will sometimes find her, before dinnertime, fast asleep in a cozy nook on her bedroom floor.
She is full of wonderful expressions and wonderful dialogues. True delights. She is full of wonderful scowls (that she can maintain for almost an hour) and wonderful screams. Sugar and spice indeed.

And that's it for now. (Lucy will get her own special Update later this month, marking her 9-months.)

9 years

9 Reasons Why It's Great to Be Married to Ben:

9. He's so darn handsome
8. He likes to bake interesting things from cookbooks such as "Scandinavian Baking" and "The Little House on the Prairie Cookbook."
7. He is extremely supportive of my roles as a lady, wife, and mother.
6. While he's not super great at planning things, he goes along great with my plans.
5. He likes me.
4. He can build things - like beds (using new material) to chicken coops (using old material):

3. He wants to be a farmer, but sticks with his real job so he can support his adoring family.
2. While he may not be a "master" in one thing (something that troubles him) he is incredibly talented in a whole variety of subjects and activities. He's well-rounded. Great to go camping with. Athletic even though he hardly tries. Desires to be better. Studies gospel principles. Hard working. Real handy - around the house and, ahem, my derriere. Intelligent (though he thinks not). And, yes, sometimes even funny.
1. Because my life is so much better with him in it.

Happy Anniversary to us!

Easter Sunday cuties

So I apologize, but I have oodles and oodles of these pictures. I just can't help myself. I, along with my mother's help (or should I say, my mother along with my help???), made the skirts for the girls and the bow-ties for the boys. Ben tied the bow-ties, thank goodness - so hard, seriously. I got the skirt tutorial here and the bow-ties here. I got the fabric on sale at an adorable fabric store where my parents live - got it, plus elastic, for under 10 dollars. How cool - 2 skirts and 2 bow-ties for under $10. Love it. And, yes, though I do not adore birds, I instantly fell in love with the fabric and thought it would be perfect for both my girls and boys. And I think it pretty much was. . .

Our Easter Fun-festivities

The pictures aren't the greatest, really, but document I must. . .
What a goofy picture of dyeing Easter eggs!

So I saw a couple of blogs where they grew wheat grass in the Easter baskets. I loved the idea and started right away - since I only had 10 days until Easter. As you can see I had varied results - even though the seeds came from the exact same bowl, all soaked over nite, all baskets in the same locations each day, etc. So weird. And of course it was Miles' basket that grew like wild. Of course, because luck just seems to follow him like that. I'm so doing this again, but giving myself a few extra days. . . just in case.

Saturday morning was filled with the easter-egg hunt in the backyard (a cold and wet backyard) and the easter-basket hunt inside. Miles seemed pretty happy about his basket!

So precious.

Pure excitement!

Finding eggs.

Emmy's color-coded pink egg.

Luckily the easter-bunny didn't forget Lucy and brought her this toy (Miles actually prayed the nite before that the easter-bunny would bring something for Lucy. Whew.).

Chicken Farmers

We are now chicken farmers. This has been a dream of Miles' for the last year. And a dream of Ben's for. . . I don't know how long. It just goes along with his ultimate dream of being a farmer. A garden, now chickens. I wonder what's next. . . ?

Anyways, Ben built the chicken coop (called "the barn" by Emmy) from mostly scraps in our backyard. I think it turned out great. Although it was a way bigger project than we realized - meaning it took longer than expected and was definitely more stressful! I'll show more pictures once it's fully completed - we still have a few things to do.

But getting the chicks just couldn't wait. And since everything was in order to house chicks (we think???), we went last nite. The kids were bursting with excitement - especially Miles. Unespecially me. Ha. (Remember, I hate birds. And while these chicks are so adorable, adults are not. Oh well. But actually, I am excited about this as I think it will be a neat, fun, and learning experience. Plus, I think getting eggs from our back yard will be so cool.)

Emmy got a Delaware chicken and named her "Princess Nora." Jonas got an araucana and something else. His chicks' names are "Peck-peck" (changed from "Peggy" as of last nite) and "P.P." (not "pee-pee" b/c when I questioned him on the name he said, "no, you know like the letters." whatever.). Miles got 2 americana greens. One is named "Eggy." The other, "Cheep-cheep." Awesome.

8 months

Lucy is 8-months old today (yea! i got the date right this time. . .). She continues to be a delight to our entire family. She'd be perfect if she'd learned how to sleep through the night. I guess we all have our faults.

She is getting her bottom lower front 2 teeth. She likes eating cereal puffs - well, not apple cinnamon flavor. But she did love the sweet potato ones. She currently has some stomach bug that causes havoc on her backside and clothing twice a day. She has an adorable squinty smile that melts me to pieces. She will roll over from front to back. I finally made myself force her to do tummy-time and she caught on quickly. But she doesn't like to be on her tummy much at all - within a minute she usually rolls over. She is nowhere near close to crawling. She doesn't roll from back to front yet. We'll work on that this month.

Emmy delights her! Emmy can play so well with her; it's awesome. Lucy just eats her up. Sweet little Jonas is a little to touchy with her, I think. He's so cute, but doesn't get the whole "personal space" concept. Miles is very sweet and good with her, too. But, again, it's Emmy that truly delights our little Lucy babe.

Here are some pictures of Lucy outside today - at the only spot where we have green grass (where our rain-gutters are. it has been so pathetically dry here. we've already had to turn on our sprinklers. ugh.). Anyways, here's the little sweetie at 8-months:

Everything has to go in the mouth. She couldn't keep her hands from shoving dirt, dead grass, tulip stems, etc. in her mouth.

She "claps" when you ask her to. Adorable.

The squinty-smile. Melting. . .

Purty cute.

Up-Close and Personal

I was trying to get a {silly} shot of her sprouting tooth. . .

P.S. I am so doing THIS and THIS.

A Little Bit of Spring Break

Miles started his spring break last week - he had a short-day on Thursday, then out Friday and all of this week. So after his assembly on Thursday (he got a "math award"!), I checked him out and we headed off to my folks' home. And I just have to say that my kids are really amazing car travelers. We get books on CDs, as well as some songs/poems, etc., and Miles just eats them up. Jonas stays pretty well tuned-in. Emmy? Not so much, but she does okay nonetheless. And Lucy does fantastic, too. She fusses very, very, very little. I'm so lucky.

Anyways, Friday was to be an actual "spring-like" day - nice and warm. So we hit up the park a couple of times that day:

Having a little picnic at a park. Love Jonas' backwards shirt. :) Right after this Emmy was in complete tears as the bathrooms were locked. When you gotta go, you gotta go! Poor girl. Our park time here ended sooner than planned.

But we did enjoy some swinging time before we left. Such cuties.

Happy! For now!

Sweetie.

On Saturday my parents had some pre-arranged plans. I didn't want to just hang out at home, so we went off to the Zoo. It was the perfect day - cloudy, and neither too-hot nor too-cold. Awesome. It was really fun and neat to see all the animals. Miles was super excited about the "red bellied piranha." And all the birds we saw at one "rain forest" exhibit. And "everything" else, of course. They all really enjoyed it.

My monkeys and their monkeys.

Sunday was General Conference. The kids did really well considering it's so long. We played some conference bingo and the boys were pretty in to that (especially Miles). Oh, and spring? It left and snow came in its place that day. (My old stompin' ground town of Sandy - where, really, I did little stompin' - got 9 inches of snow!)

Monday we went to a place called Jungle Jim's Playsomething. I had bought coupons months and months ago online via some daily-deal site (tipped off by Ben's cousin, Mindy - thanks Mindy!). Actually, the coupon expired the last day of last year but because of the 2 feet of snow dumped at my parents' place we weren't able to go over winter break. So I asked my mom (cause I knew she would) to ask if they would still validate it and they did. So cool.

This place is pretty much indoor kiddie carnival rides. My kids loved, loved, loved it!
Some spinning ride.

The roller coaster. A definite favorite. Man it went fast for little kids! It went around and around, stopped, then did it all again and just as fast backwards. Crazy.

Oh bumper cars were a hit too! Well, except for Emmy. It was a little hard and confusing for her. I went once with her and we had a blast, though! But the boys loved this ride, too. It was just too fun watching them!

After the rides we went over to my Grandma Phyllis' place. I showed the kids a little "ledge" place down in the basement (my mom and grandma call it a ledge - I would call it more like a cellar-ledge. It's this underground, yet above basement floor, unfinished room. Like an attic, only accessed from the basement.) My sister and I, as well as my mom when she was a young girl, would always play in it. My kids loved it too and wanted to sleep-over in it that very nite. Cute. We then went to Red Lobster. Miles has wanted to go for the past couple of years and so my parents took us. Jonas and Emmy ate fries and dessert. Awesome. Oh, and the yummy rolls. Miles ate rolls, and he licked his bowl of clam chowder clean. He had ordered crab legs. He loved the idea of them, but just so-so liked eating them. :)
It was a fun experience for him.

My beautiful grandma and little girl.

We came back on Tuesday to a very lonely Ben. :) We missed him, too, so it was good to be back. Tho' my kids just don't understand why we can't live with grandparents.

P.S. My sleep at my parents's house was horrible! Lucy was up like 3 times each nite - then another kid would need me at some point during the nite as well (which hardly ever happens at home). One nite I was up like every hour for 4 hours. It was totally lame. I was in the same room as Lucy and will probably never do that again. We all have little colds - that seem worse at nite. I would try to stifle my coughs because if I made a sound it was awaken little Lucy. Then after I would feed her I had a hard time getting back to sleep because of Lucy's stuffed-nosed-induced snoring. So I was probably pretty cranky to be around! But the other 3 kids did pretty darn well sleeping all together in one room. But, dang, Lucy is almost 8 months and I am ready for some good, full-nite sleepin'! :)

P.P.S. Man am I a wordy girl!
