Well Emmy's first season of high school cross-country has ended. Overall, she loved it. I mean, she hated the running part, ha, but loved everything else. She really only hated the running part while she was running and maybe the next 5 minutes after finishing, but other than that she enjoyed running. :) She loved the teammates - both boys and girls - and had such fun trips together. As I told her, it's her chance for having sleepovers!
When regionals was coming up, Emmy really didn't want to qualify. Well, the team to qualify. She knew she wouldn't individually, but the team was definitely a contender for state. But Emmy was just kind of done with it all at that point . . . But she was still going to try her hardest. And she did.
For a cross-country team, it's the first 5 runners whose times make up the team's score. There were only 8 girls on the team, and Emmy was usually the 6th or 7th finisher. (She's part of a super-fast team - including three super-duper-fast freshman.) However, at regionals Emmy had taken on the 5th spot during the race - meaning, if she kept up that place - her score would count. So at about the half-way point, her coach (who tabulates all the teams, scores, etc. and knows exactly what position his team is in) yelled at her, told her she was in 5th, told her the team was currently in 5th place (the top 4 teams make it to state), and told her she had to pass this certain girl ahead of her to secure a 4th-place finish for the team. All this yelling/encouraging made Emmy cry. Haha. So then her coach panics, realizing that crying will not help her run faster - and again yells at her to "Stop Crying!" Haha. Emmy somehow managed to stop the tears and ended up passing that girl and ended up securing her team a spot in the state meet. So even though Emmy was done with the season mentally, she was excited that she helped get her team to state! Yay!
So state . . . She competed in Colorado Springs on the day Ben and I flew to Honduras. So we didn't get to go see her. But Grandma Diana and Grandpa Max went and saw her! The pressure wasn't really on for Emmy . . . I mean the top girls on her team (who place in the top 10 and even top 5 in their normal-season races) would finish about the 50th percentile at state. I told Emmy, not to be rude but realistic, that she would be probably be the last 10 or so to finish. Emmy was told she was 136th out 156. And she was just fine with that! She had a fun time at state and they even went to dinner the night before all dressed up fancy - both guys and girls. Cute.
The following Wednesday, while Ben and I were in Honduras, there was a team awards celebration. My sister Erin, who was staying with my kids, went and got this video. Thanks Erin! Emmy also got a bunch of pictures at the celebration - of which I took pictures of with my phone and will post them here. :)

It was so fun (for me, not for Lucy--hahaha) to be able to see her and her team celebrated! What a fun season.
